I’m not sure if it’s the existence of a mainstream successful, global brand built entirely and brazenly on the exploitation and objectification of women and girls that gets me, or, the existence of a global successful brand built entirely and brazenly on the exploitation…..you get the point.
I had thought the pathetic leatherette Hefner empire was in terminal decline in the UK; its Oxford Street store closed down last year and the logo’s slimy seep into accepted mainstream culture via girls pencil cases and duvet covers has been largely stemmed, thanks to tireless feminist campaigning.
Alas, it seems one can never take one’s disgusted eye off the Playboy balls. It emerged this month the brand is recruiting “Bunnies” for a new club opening in Mayfair West London.
That’s right – full grown women paid to dress in demeaning ‘bunny’ outfits in the 21st century and act like its an honour and a privilege to be wandering around a casino, serving men drinks with a pair of pointy ears on her head, a fluffy globe stuck to her bum, stilettos, and not much else.
Britain happily waved goodbye to the last Playboy club after its licences were revoked in 1981. We have been driving Hefner and his ridiculous, anachronistic misogyny out of the UK wherever we can ever since.
The pre-publicity for this club has already talked about attracting a ’starry clientele’ with its ‘luxury and class.’ Its time to say no to casual Playboy porn masquerading as acceptable entertainment in the upmarket streets of London again.
